Killing In The Name, an expletive-heavy rock song first released in 1992 by rage-against-the-machine has won the battle for Christmas top spot in the UK on the basis of downloads only. Spurred on by the reprise "....I won't do what you tell me" it sold 500,000 copies last week, around 50,000 more than The Climb, Joe McElderry's bland ballad.

The battle brought together some of the biggest trends of the year:The scale of X factor's dominance of the airwaves (they have had the last 4 Christmas No. 1's), the move to digital downloads and most significantly the growth of social media, in particular, facebook. Facebook has revealed some recent stats (December '09) to show how many people are using the site everyday, and as TechRadar notes quite succinctly, "the stats are pretty mind-blowing."Worldwide, Facebook gets about 200 billion pageviews per month; the site now has 350 million members (up about 50 million people in only two-and-a-half months); a total of 1.4 million images are uploaded every second; and Facebook users send 1.6 billion chat messages to each other every single day.
In the UK it has over 23 million members. In addition to massive usage numbers, Facebook said one of its applications called "Farmville" is more popular than its rival social networking site Twitter. Farmville is an online game developed by a third-party that lets users farm with friends, and it's used by 69.3 million people per month. In Ireland the numbers for Facebook are equally impressive. It's users stand at 1.2 million as of Dec 21st 2009. It has doubled in size in the last year. Over 1.1 million of these are over 18.
As well as being the first download only Christmas number one the Los Angeles rock band's hit also set another record: it has achieved the biggest download sales total in a first week ever in the UK charts.Incidentially, Rage Against The Machine are signed to Epic Records, which is part of Sony BMG, the same label as McElderry.
The Irish Christmas number one is still up for grabs with sales up to the 24th counting, currently X factor is top of the tree!
